To drink mate together — the sacred Argentinian and Uruguayan ritual of sharing the infusion in a circle. Mateando isn't just drinking; it's a slow, social ceremony where the gourd passes around the group and conversation flows without hurry. To be invited to matear is to belong.
A bunch of young guys, a crew of teenagers, or any group of kids making noise. In Argentina, 'piberío' evokes the sound and energy of youth — loud, mobile, taking over a plaza or street corner with their presence. Chaotic and full of life.
Bad luck, negative energy, or a person who seems to attract misfortune wherever they go. In Argentina and Uruguay, someone with 'mufa' is the human equivalent of a black cat — not malicious, just catastrophically unlucky, and their presence tends to spread the curse.
A person with an extraordinary ability to attract others, often in a romantic or social context. The highest level of social magnetism.
A corpse, a dead body. In Argentina, 'fiambre' is the darkly humorous lunfardo term for a dead person — borrowed from the word for cold cuts. The humor is very Argentine: blunt, morbid, and delivered with complete deadpan. Not used in polite company.
