To hitchhike — extending your thumb to ask passing cars for a ride. In Argentina and Uruguay, 'hacer dedo' is a normal, everyday thing, especially for long trips on rural roads where public transport doesn't reach. Thumbing your way across the country is a rite of passage.
To make out passionately and get physical with someone at a party or social outing. In Argentina and Uruguay, 'apretar' is the action of the party — finding someone attractive, getting close, and kissing. Energetic and spontaneous, with no strings attached implied.
A spontaneous, unplanned gathering at someone's house with a large crowd that nobody warned the host about. In Argentina, a 'malón' is both exciting and slightly anarchic — it just happens, people show up, and suddenly there's a party that goes until morning.
A street theater and music ensemble that performs during carnival, blending humor, social commentary, and spectacular costumes. In Uruguay especially, the murga is a serious art form — groups rehearse for months to perform satirical pieces that skewer politicians and society.
A clumsy, slow, or ridiculous person who embarrasses themselves without realizing it. In Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile, 'ganso' is the friend who trips entering the room, says the wrong thing at the wrong time, or stares blankly when everyone else gets the joke.
