/Sounds like "ha" (as in "ha!") + "LONE"/

A free ride in someone's car. In Central America, especially Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, asking for a jalón is extremely common, particularly in areas where public transportation does not reach well. It is the local equivalent of hitchhiking but more casual and neighborly.

Example

"¿Me das un jalón hasta la esquina? -> Can you give me a ride to the corner?"

"Le pedí jalón al señor de la camioneta. -> I asked the truck guy for a ride."

Regional synonyms:

To skip class without permission to go do something more fun, used in Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. It's the teenage art of making up excuses or simply not showing up to school when there's something better to do outside, the Latin American equivalent of playing hooky or ditching class.
