Meaning

A bright orange marigold flower that is central to Mexico's Day of the Dead tradition. From the Nahuatl "zempoalxóchitl," the cempasúchil's intense color and penetrating scent are believed to guide the souls of the departed back to their family altars during their annual visit.

Examples

We bought cempasúchil at the market to decorate my grandfather's altar.

A Day of the Dead altar without cempasúchil is simply not complete.

Regional synonyms

In Mexico, a night out drinking with friends. You say it will just be a couple of beers and you end up closing the bar without knowing how you got home. Comes from pistear, the Mexican slang verb for drinking.
