Bandera de Ecuador

/Sounds like "CHOO-tah"/

An Ecuadorian interjection of surprise, frustration, or mild complaint, a soft euphemism for a stronger word. "Chuta, se me olvidó" means dang it, I forgot. Used in every context, from kids to elderly ladies, at the office or on the street. The word is so identifiable with Ecuador that hearing it places the speaker immediately. Also extends to "chuta vos" or "chuta mano" as friendly vocatives.

Example

"Chuta, perdí el celular. → Dang, I lost the phone."

"Chuta vos, llegaste tardísimo. → Dude, you're so late."
