Meaning

In Chile, to swear and curse out loud: letting loose a stream of profanity, usually out of anger. When someone garabatea, they are going off with insults when something sets them off.

Examples

He started garabateando when someone keyed his car on the street.

Don't garabatear in front of the kids, watch your language.

Regional synonyms

The most Mexican farewell there is. It literally sounds like an insult but it is pure affection between close friends. If someone says this to you, it means they trust you enough to joke around with you freely. A total stranger hearing it would be deeply confused.
