Bandera de Puerto Rico

/Sounds like "AH-choh"/

A Puerto Rican interjection used at the start of a phrase to express surprise, complaint, emphasis, or just buy time before saying something. "Acho, mano, eso no se hace" is the classic start of a complaint. "Acho, no sabía nada" is reacting with astonishment. Works like "hey" in other countries but with genuine Boricua flavor. It's a daily word in Puerto Rico and immediately marks the island accent.

Example

"Acho, mira esta vaina. → Dude, look at this mess."

"Acho mano, te perdiste un juegazo. → Hey bro, you missed a great game."
