Bandera de Costa Rica

/Sounds like "kah-BAHN-gah"/

A Tico word for a specific type of nostalgia, melancholy, or soft sadness, usually for someone far away or something already gone. It's not depression or crying: it's that emotional dip from remembering a love, a friend who left, or a time that won't come back. "Me dio cabanga" is an intimate, almost poetic confession that only Ticos use this way.

Example

"Me dio cabanga al ver su foto. → I got that pang looking at her photo."

"Tengo cabanga desde que se fue mi carnal. → I've been down since my buddy left."
