Bandera de Costa Rica

/Sounds like "YOH-doh"/

A Costa Rican word for badly made, watered-down, or just low-quality coffee. "Eso no es café, es yodo" is the typical insult for coffee served weak, no body, tasting like tinted water. The metaphor comes from the color and medicinal taste of pharmacy iodine, which nobody wants to drink. In a coffee country like Costa Rica, calling coffee yodo is a serious complaint against the café of the day.

Example

"Qué yodo sirvieron en la oficina. → What awful coffee they served at the office."

"Siempre está como yodo. → It's always weak."
