Bandera de Puerto Rico

/Sounds like "bee-CHOH-teh"/

A street tíguere or important figure in the drug trade and urban hustle of Puerto Rico. Comes from English "big shot" adapted to Boricua phonetics. A bichote is who runs the block, who has money, respect, and people around him. The word jumps from street life into Puerto Rican rap and trap, where it shows up constantly. Bad Bunny, Anuel, and others have used it in lyrics.

Example

"Ese tipo se cree bichote del barrio. → That guy thinks he's the big shot of the hood."

"El bichote de la esquina. → The kingpin of the corner."

Regional synonyms:

A connection, hookup, or inside contact who helps you get something, whether it's a job, a favor, or access to something exclusive. In Chile it's extremely common and reflects the culture of "it's not what you know, it's who you know." Having a pituto can open doors that talent alone sometimes can't.
