Meaning

To hang up the gloves and retire definitively from an activity or career. Originally from boxing, in Argentina and Uruguay the expression applies to any permanent decision to stop: a professional career, a sport, or a long-held job.

Examples

A los cuarenta colgó los guantes y se fue a vivir al campo.

At forty he hung up his gloves and moved to the countryside.

El arquero anunció que cuelga los guantes al finalizar esta temporada.

The goalkeeper announced he is hanging up his gloves at the end of this season.

Regional synonyms

A humorous nickname for beer in Mexico, part of the long tradition of inventing creative slang names for it: chela, cheve, fría, helada, and now agua de princesa. The joke is calling something as ordinary as a beer something as fancy as "princess water."
