/Sounds like "KWAH-chehs"/

A Honduran, Salvadoran, and Guatemalan word for twins. It comes from Náhuatl "cóatl" (twin, serpent), the same root as Mexican "cuate" but here with the literal meaning of siblings born together. "Mis cuaches" means my twin kids, "esos cuaches" means those two identical brothers nobody can tell apart. The word keeps the indigenous root alive in Central America.

Example

"Mis cuaches cumplen cinco años. → My twins are turning five."

"No sé cuál de los cuaches es cuál. → I can't tell which twin is which."
