Meaning

Chicano Spanglish for the boss or employer, from English "boss." El bos is the one who signs your check and calls the shots at work, different from the foreman who just supervises the crew.

Examples

The boss doesn't want to pay overtime even when we work twelve hours.

Talk to the boss if you want to request a day off.

Regional synonyms

The police or a cop, said in a derogatory way or as a code word among friends to warn that the law is coming. In Mexico, saying 'ahí viene la tira' is the alarm signal for everyone to straighten up or run.
