Meaning

To be completely and hopelessly lost, with no idea where you are or what is going on. This Spanish expression references a ship carrying rice that got totally lost at sea: totally disoriented, zero bearings, no clue.

Examples

Sin GPS está más perdido que el barco del arroz en esa ciudad.

Without GPS he is completely lost in that city.

En la reunión de presupuestos estaba más perdido que el barco del arroz.

In the budget meeting he had absolutely no idea what was going on.

Regional synonyms

A dumb thing, stupidity, or unthinking statement or action in Costa Rican Spanish. "Qué hueveada" is the Tico reaction to any absurd comment, ridiculous decision, or poorly thought-out plan. It comes from "huevón" but became a noun describing specifically the dumb action or word, not the person. Used daily and with total ease among Ticos of all ages.
