Bandera de Cuba

/Sounds like "gow" (rhymes with "cow")/

A Cuban word from caló and street slang meaning house, home. "Vamos pa' el gao" means "let's go home," and "en el gao" means "at home." It's used in informal and youthful conversations, and carries a relaxed, street, unpretentious tone. It's one of those words that mark neighborhood identity in Cuba: using them signals that you know the street register of the island.

Example

"Vamos pa' el gao, está cayendo un aguacero. → Let's head home, it's pouring rain."

"Te espero en el gao a las ocho. → I'll wait for you at home at eight."
