Meaning

In Venezuela, a show-off who brags constantly without anything real to back it up. A mandarina talks big about trips never taken, drops names of people barely known, and puts on a performance of success that falls apart under the slightest scrutiny. The word is mocking.

Examples

Esa mandarina habla de viajes que nunca ha hecho. (That show-off talks about trips she has never actually taken.)

No seas mandarina, baja al nivel de todos. (Don't be such a braggart, come back down to earth.)

Regional synonyms

A thousand-colón bill in Costa Rica, named for the red color that once distinguished it. "Un rojo" means 1,000 colones, "cinco rojos" means 5,000. Even after redesigns changed the actual color, the word stuck in everyday Tico speech for any informal transaction.
