An informal pickup soccer game between friends, no league, no referee, no strict rules. The mejenga is dirt-field soccer, concrete court, empty lot, or plaza soccer, played for the pure joy of playing. In Costa Rica it's a social institution: Saturdays, Sundays, and after work, groups of Ticos gather to mejenguear. The word comes from popular speech and has no exact equivalent in other countries.
