Meaning

To be very smart, savvy, or experienced, someone who cannot be easily fooled. In Spain and Mexico, "saber latín" is a compliment packed inside an old-fashioned expression: this person understands how the world works and is not going to fall for anything obvious.

No intentes engañarlo, ese sabe latín.

Don't try to trick him, he knows exactly what's going on.

Mi abuela no iba a la escuela pero sabía más latín que nadie.

My grandmother never went to school but she was sharper than anyone around.

Regional synonyms

In Mexico, to get thrown in jail or to lock someone up. "Tambo" is Mexican slang for prison, so entambar means to send someone straight there. Used casually when talking about arrests for street crimes or getting caught doing something you definitely should not have been doing.
