Meaning

In Spain, to bolt or take off at full speed, leaving a place in a sudden rush. The image comes from a whistle blowing: when it sounds, you move immediately. Used when someone leaves with urgency, whether in a hurry or to avoid something.

The moment the boss showed up, everyone bolted from the bar.

I had to race out of work so I would not be late for my doctor's appointment.

Regional synonyms

A total bore, someone so dull and draining they suck the energy out of any group they join. Used in Spain. The word comes from "plomo" (lead), the heavy metal, and the image is perfect: this person weighs you down, slows everything, and you simply cannot lift the mood with them around.
