Meaning

To stir up trouble and then play innocent, causing harm while pretending you had nothing to do with it. Used across Spain, Mexico, and Argentina. It is considered one of the most cowardly moves in social dynamics: you throw the stone, then hide your hand behind your back and look around wondering who did it.

Examples

He threw the stone and hid his hand as usual, spreading rumors and then acting completely shocked.

That guy always causes the drama and then stands back with a clean conscience while everyone else deals with the fallout.

Regional synonyms

At least, or the bare minimum you can settle for in Mexico. "De perdis" is how you make peace with an imperfect outcome: if you cannot have the ideal, de perdis you hold onto the smallest win. It carries a resigned but practical tone, like saying "well, at least there's that."
