Bandera de Costa Rica

A purely Costa Rican phrase for something or someone at the absolute peak of their category, the very best of the best, something nothing else can top. The image comes from eating a ripe mango: that last suck of the pit is where all the sweetness concentrates, and there's nothing left after it. Costa Ricans use it sincerely to praise something amazing, and sarcastically to tear down someone who walks around acting like they're the best at everything.

Example

"Ese carro nuevo que se compró está como la última chupada del mango. -> That new car he bought is the absolute best, there's nothing like it."

"La fiesta del sábado fue la última chupada del mango. -> Saturday's party was the peak, everyone's still talking about it."

Regional synonyms:

Total indifference — not caring at all about something or someone in Chile. When you're "ni ahí," you couldn't care less. It's maximum apathy: you don't know, don't care, and aren't going to start now.
