/Sounds like "NYOH" (as in "onion") + "nyoh" (as in "onion")/

Meaning

A shy, bookish, or socially awkward person who comes across as naive and unworldly. Think the kid who always had their nose in a textbook and never really hung out after school. In Chile and Argentina the word can sting a little or feel almost affectionate depending on who says it and how.

Examples

He was the biggest nerd in class, but ended up the most successful one.

Me, a nerd? No way, I go out every weekend.

Regional synonyms

To wink at someone as a silent signal of shared understanding, agreement, or complicity in Chile and Argentina. When words would be awkward or unnecessary, a wink says "we both know what this means" without anyone having to spell it out.
