Meaning

In Venezuela, a worthless person or the deadweight of the group. The word comes from "afrecho," the bran or chaff left over after milling wheat: the leftover waste once the good part is gone. Applied to a person, it means someone who takes up space and contributes absolutely nothing.

Examples

Don't bother with him; he's the deadweight of the whole team.

They called him useless to his face and he walked off absolutely furious.

Regional synonyms

A peso, or money in general, in everyday Mexican slang. Every "baro" counts when you are short on cash and need to scrape together coins for the bus or the street taco stand. Losing a baro hurts when you are running on empty.
