/Sounds like "chee" (as in "cheek") + "neh" (as in "net") + "AHR" (as in "art")/

Meaning

To carry a small child in your arms or to pamper and spoil someone with affectionate attention. In Costa Rica and Nicaragua, "chinear" is one of the most tender verbs in everyday speech. It is what grandparents do to grandchildren and what loving overprotection looks like in action.

Examples

Grandma spends all her time fussing over her grandchild and won't put him down.

Don't spoil him so much, he's going to get used to it.

To take a comment or joke personally when it was not aimed at you. In Mexico, someone who "se toma el palo" gets defensive over something that had nothing to do with them, which usually just confirms everyone else's suspicion that it actually did.
