Meaning

To catch someone off guard or at a moment of distraction when they were not prepared. The person doing the catching has a clear advantage over whoever got caught flat-footed. Common in Spain.

Examples

They caught him completely off guard during the audit and he had nothing to say.

He got here so fast it caught me totally unprepared, I had nothing ready.

A mechanical breakdown, when the car breaks down and stops working in the middle of the road. It's every driver's nightmare, being stranded with a dead car, usually at the worst possible time.
