Meaning

To be completely swamped with work or tangled in a situation so complicated you cannot see the way out. In Argentina and Uruguay, when you are hasta las manos you have so much on your plate you do not even know where to start.

Examples

I am totally buried in work this week, no end in sight.

She is swamped with exams right now and barely sleeping.

Regional synonyms

A thief, crook, or untrustworthy person with bad intentions. This is the most widespread meaning outside Colombia: someone you shouldn't leave alone with your wallet. In Spain and the Southern Cone, calling someone "pillo" is not a compliment.
