/Sounds like "ah" (as in "art") + "SEHR" (as in "set") + "LAH" (as in "lava") + "peh" (as in "pet") + "LOH" (as in "loan") + "tah" (as in "tar")/

Meaning

To butter someone up or suck up to them with obvious, shameless flattery in order to get something in return. In Spain, hacer la pelota is almost cartoonish in its transparency: everyone around can see exactly what is happening, but the person receiving it often enjoys it anyway.

Examples

He always butters up the boss and that's exactly how he lands the best projects.

Stop sucking up and just tell me what you want directly.

Regional synonyms

To completely upend the rules or the established order, usually abruptly. In Argentina and Uruguay, patear el tablero means blowing up what was agreed in order to start fresh, flipping the whole board over when a process has stalled or when someone decides the current setup simply is not working.
