Meaning

To down a full drink in one shot, or by extension to sit through something tedious without any choice. In Mexico the same verb covers chugging a beer solo or enduring a boring two-hour meeting.

Examples

He polished off the whole big beer by himself before anyone else arrived.

I had to sit through two hours of meetings without saying a word.

Regional synonyms

Excessive, over the top, exaggerated. In Argentina it can be positive or negative depending on context: something insanely good or someone who crossed the line with bad behavior.
