/Sounds like "sah-GWAH-teh"/
A street dog or mixed-breed dog in Costa Rica, especially one adopted from the shelter or that shows up at your door. The word comes from Náhuatl and stuck in Tico Spanish as an affectionate synonym for "mutt." Zaguates are the most Tico dogs possible: loyal, tough, friendly, and always ready for the neighborhood. Also used figuratively for a common person, unpretentious, of the people.
"Tengo dos zaguates en la casa. → I have two mutts at home."
"Ese mae es bien zaguate. → That dude is down to earth."
