Bandera de Perú

/Sounds like "ahm-PIE"/

A Peruvian exclamation shouted by someone who catches or discovers another in the act. Comes from the children's hide-and-seek game: when you find another player you yell "ampay" to mark the catch. Today it's used in adult life for any surprise discovery: the unfaithful partner, the politician in a scandal, the lying friend. "Te hice ampay" means I caught you red-handed.

Example

"Ampay maridito, te vi con otra. → Gotcha, hubby, I saw you with someone else."

"Le hicieron ampay al cantante. → They caught the singer red-handed."
