/Sounds like "ehs" (as in "egg") + "tee" (as in "tea") + "RAHR" (as in "rapper") + "LAH" (as in "lava") + "PAH" (as in "park") + "tah" (as in "tar")/

Meaning

To kick the bucket, to die. In Colombia and Venezuela, "estirar la pata" is the dark-humored, matter-of-fact way of saying someone (or something) has finally given out. Used equally for people and for objects that stop working, which adds a funny layer of levity to both situations.

Examples

If you keep being that reckless, you're going to kick the bucket soon.

The TV finally gave up the ghost; time to get a new one.

Regional synonyms

To pay attention to someone, to acknowledge their presence. In the Caribbean, especially the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Cuba, "no pararle bola" means to completely ignore someone, to give them the cold shoulder as if they do not exist.
