/Sounds like "reh" (as in "red") + "AHL" (as in "art")/

Meaning

Money in Venezuela, a term that comes from the colonial Spanish coin "real" and has survived centuries of inflation. When a Venezuelan says "no tengo reales," they're flat broke, not a bolívar to their name.

Examples

I don't have a single real to eat.

That job doesn't pay a single real.

Word family

A tricky, scheming person who uses deception and hidden moves to get an advantage. In Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru, a mañoso never plays it straight: there is always something extra on the bill you did not order, or a clause in the deal you did not notice. The opposite of someone you can trust at face value.
