In Guatemala, a tangled mess of gossip, rumors, or a confusing social scandal where nobody is quite sure what actually happened or who said what. When a chirmol breaks out, everyone has a version of the story and none of them match.
“Qué chirmol se armó en la oficina con el nuevo jefe.”
“What a gossip storm broke out at the office over the new boss.”
“No me metas en ese chirmol, yo no sé nada.”
“Don't drag me into that mess, I honestly don't know anything about it.”

A Guatemalan fresh tomato salsa made with chopped onion, cilantro, chile, and lime, served alongside grilled meats and traditional dishes. It is the Guatemalan equivalent of Mexican pico de gallo but with its own identity and character.
“No barbecue in Guatemala is complete without a good chirmol on the side.”
“Make some chirmol to go with the tamales.”

A Guatemalan sauce made with tomatoes and onion charred directly on a comal with no oil, then blended into a chunky, smoky condiment. The base of many traditional preparations, it accompanies beans, grilled meats, and broths. Its name comes from Nahuatl "chilmolli" (chile sauce).
“Beef broth just does not taste the same without chirmol.”
“My grandmother makes the best chirmol with tomatoes from the garden roasted right on the comal.”
