Meaning

To lose your train of thought or the thread of a conversation mid-way through. In Central America and Mexico, once you lose the hilo you have to backtrack to find where you left off before you can continue.

Examples

Perdí el hilo de la clase cuando el teléfono vibró y ya no pude seguir.

I lost track of the lecture when my phone vibrated and couldn't follow anymore.

If someone interrupts me I lose my train of thought and have to start over.

Regional synonyms

To backstab someone or undermine their position covertly, usually to take their job or place in a group. The classic workplace betrayal: smiling to someone's face while quietly sawing the floor out from under them.
