A Chicano and Mexican expression meaning to stay alert, pay attention, don't let yourself get caught off guard. It comes from the image of an eagle watching from above, ready to react to any movement. "Ponte águila" is a direct and affectionate warning at once: be careful, stay sharp, don't get comfortable. It's used in real danger situations or simply when someone is distracted.

Example

"Ponte águila, esa zona anda caliente. → Stay sharp, that area's hot today."

"Si no te pones águila. → If you don't stay alert."

Regional synonyms:

In the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, tennis shoes or ordinary, low-quality shoes that one wears in the street without much concern for appearance. It also describes a lazy person who hangs out on the street without a job.
