Meaning

A compliment tossed at someone in public, usually about their looks. In Spanish-speaking cultures, piropos range from poetic verses to blunt flattery. How welcome they are depends entirely on context and tone: street piropos are increasingly seen as unwanted in big cities.

Examples

Le echó un piropo al pasar y ella ni lo miró. (He threw out a compliment as she walked by and she didn't even look at him.)

Los piropos de calle están cada vez más en desuso en las ciudades grandes. (Street catcalling is becoming less and less common in big cities.)
