/Sounds like "PLAH" (as in "plan") + "tah" (as in "tar") + "noh" (as in "note")/

Meaning

A large, thick fruit that's cooked fried, roasted, in mole, or in slices across Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It's not a banana: plátano is for cooking, banana is for eating raw, and that difference is sacred.

Examples

Some fried plátano macho with cream and beans.

Fried ripe plátano is the best side dish.

Regional synonyms

A compliment tossed at someone in public, usually about their looks. In Spanish-speaking cultures, piropos range from poetic verses to blunt flattery. How welcome they are depends entirely on context and tone: street piropos are increasingly seen as unwanted in big cities.
