Meaning

A sycophant who flatters those in power to get ahead, the classic yes-man who celebrates even his boss's mistakes. In Colombia and Venezuela, pelota is synonymous with "lambón" or "lame botas": someone who never has their own opinion, only whatever the boss thinks.

Examples

Ese pelota le celebra hasta los errores al jefe para quedar bien. (That yes-man cheers his boss's mistakes just to stay in his good graces.)

No seas pelota y di lo que realmente piensas en la reunión. (Don't be a suck-up, say what you actually think in the meeting.)

A person who excessively flatters others to gain favor and get ahead, a brown-noser or suck-up. In Argentina, the pelota agrees with everything the boss says and never has their own opinion.
