A person who snitches on others, the classic tattletale in Spain. The one who runs to tell the teacher, the boss, or any authority absolutely everything to score points at everyone else's expense.
“The chivato told the teacher who cheated.”
“Don't be a chivato, handle your problems yourself.”
/Sounds like "chee" (as in "cheek") + "BAH" (as in "bar") + "toh" (as in "toll")/
Traffic light or stoplight in Venezuela. While the standard Spanish word is "semaforo," Venezuelans use "chivato" in everyday speech. Fittingly, chivato elsewhere means snitch, and Venezuelans will tell you: both rat you out the moment you are about to do something wrong.
“Stop at the red light.”
“I ran the stoplight and got a ticket right away.”
/Sounds like "chee" (as in "cheek") + "BAH" (as in "bar") + "toh" (as in "toll")/
A snitch, tattletale, or informer who betrays the group by reporting to authorities or superiors. Used in Spain, Venezuela, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, the chivato is universally looked down on because they sell out people who trusted them.
“Be careful what you say around him, he is a snitch.”
“The informer was the one who turned them all in to the police, and nobody suspected a thing.”

To get mixed up in something shady or morally compromising, ending up tainted by association. In Spain, once you are "pringado" there is no pretending you were not involved. The word literally means getting covered in grease or fat, and socially it means you are implicated whether you meant to be or not.
