/Sounds like "ehs" (as in "egg") + "TAHR" (as in "tar") + "EHN" (as in "egg") + "LAHS" (as in "lava") + "NOO" (as in "nuke") + "behs" (as in "bed")/

Meaning

To be completely distracted, daydreaming, or mentally absent from what is happening around you. Your body is in the room but your mind is somewhere else entirely, and people have to repeat things multiple times to get through to you. Used across Spain and Latin America.

Examples

He has been totally zoned out, he did not hear a word in class.

Ever since he got a girlfriend he walks around with his head in the clouds all day.

A shy, bookish, or socially awkward person who comes across as naive and unworldly. Think the kid who always had their nose in a textbook and never really hung out after school. In Chile and Argentina the word can sting a little or feel almost affectionate depending on who says it and how.
